Reopening the Brexit question is political suicide for any British party. It destroyed the Tories only a fool would reopen it. Burnham will dodge the question. Streeting is laying a trap for him. If he says he’s in favour he will lose the by-election.
Vance, you may well be right, but the relationship between the UK and the EU cannot be the subject of some sort of political "omerta", something never to be mentioned.
Till yesterday I wasn't a fan of Wes Streeting, particularly regarding his approach to the trans issue, the self identification proposals of the Scottish Parliament vetoed by Westminster, and his opposition to the assisted dieing bill, however it's a long time since I've heard a speech from any British politician as good and moving as the one he gave to the Progress gathering.
There were two things that stood out for me. Several times he referred to social democracy. Ever since the creation of the SDP in the 1980s everyone in the Labour party has described themselves as some sort of socialist. Democratic socialist seemed to be popular on the left of the party. It's good to see social democracy coming out of the closet.
Secondly his declaration that Brexit was a catastrophic mistake and the next Labour manifesto should include a commitment to take the UK back into EU membership.
Unfortunately I missed the beginning of Streeting's speech so don't know whether he referred to voting reform, but Andy Burnham clearly has this on his agenda, though I fear it won't be this side of the general election. I hope meanwhile he will tighten up massively regulations regarding political donations, including requiring much greater transparency.
